What is Humanin?
Humanin is a 24-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide with potent cytoprotective and neuroprotective properties. It protects cells against Alzheimer-related toxicity, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Discovered in 2001, it is one of the first identified mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs).
Key Benefits & Mechanisms
Cytoprotection against cellular stress
Neuroprotective against amyloid-beta
Anti-apoptotic signaling
Reduces oxidative stress
Insulin sensitizing effects
Cardioprotective properties
Longevity-associated biomarker
Research Summary
Humanin has strong pre-clinical evidence for cytoprotection and neuroprotection. Studies show protection against Alzheimer disease-related cellular toxicity. Being investigated as a biomarker for aging and metabolic health. Part of the growing mitochondrial-derived peptide field.
Related Peptides
Epithalon
Epitalon / Epithalamin Tetrapeptide
Epithalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide that activates telomerase, the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomere length. Originally developed by Russian scientist Vladimir Khavinson, it is studied for anti-aging and longevity applications.
LongevityMOTS-c
Mitochondrial Open Reading Frame of the 12S rRNA-c
MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide that regulates metabolic homeostasis and exercise physiology. It activates AMPK, improves insulin sensitivity, and mimics the metabolic effects of exercise. Discovered at USC, it represents a new class of mitochondrial signaling peptides.
MetabolicGHK
Glycyl-Histidyl-Lysine Tripeptide
GHK is the copper-free form of the well-known GHK-Cu tripeptide. It naturally occurs in human plasma and declines significantly with age. Even without copper, GHK influences gene expression of over 4,000 human genes, many involved in tissue remodeling, DNA repair, and antioxidant defenses.
LongevityFOXO4-DRI
FOXO4 D-Retro-Inverso Peptide
FOXO4-DRI is a cell-penetrating senolytic peptide that selectively targets and eliminates senescent (zombie) cells. It works by disrupting the interaction between FOXO4 and p53, causing senescent cells to undergo apoptosis while leaving healthy cells unaffected. A breakthrough in aging research.
